For years, we’ve worked with the Google Research team to make the 7,000+ languages spoken around the world more accessible to everyone. Our latest collaboration, Language Explorer, is an interactive map and open-source data repository designed to make exploring native linguistic data easier. It’s an incredible honor to see this work recognized with three Webby Awards and an Honoree distinction in the following categories:
- Webby Winner: Websites & Mobile Sites, Responsible AI
- Webby Winner: AI, Data Visualization & Reporting
- People’s Voice Winner: AI, Data Visualization & Reporting
- Honoree: Websites & Mobile Sites, Best Visual Design
Making the world's languages more accessible
Less than 2% of the world’s languages are well-represented online, leaving millions of communities without equal access to technology. We designed the Language Explorer website to help bridge that gap, creating an approachable entry point for navigating thousands of native language samples found in LinguaMeta, the world’s largest open-source repository of language data.
The site’s core feature is a custom 3D globe that works as both a navigation tool and a responsive data visualization, providing an interactive user experience for researchers, language enthusiasts, and the general public. To make navigation easier, we built a robust filtering system that allows users to quickly sort through thousands of languages by name, number of speakers, region, and endangerment status.
The Language Explorer website is a continuation of Google’s Language Inclusion initiative, and we’re honored to continue doing meaningful work that impacts communities everywhere.
