A research hub — Made with Google
There are over 7,000 languages in the world, but only a few are well-represented online. Google Research is using AI to expand support for thousands of languages across the globe, making information more accessible for everyone. We built a website to tell that story.
This project uses cutting-edge technology to improve accessibility in communication. We used animation to connect visuals with the interviews and stories that came out of this research, emphasizing the impact that these Language Inclusion efforts have had on communities around the world.
Every language sample is collected from native speakers and digitized by Google’s research teams. Communication is the core of this work while data and AI help it grow with each recording. We spoke to people in these communities to share the impact being made in places like India, where there are over 1,300 languages spoken; New York City, where there are more languages spoken than anywhere else on Earth; and Ghana, where university research teams are archiving African languages. As other languages are added from around the world, this research will continue to break down language barriers and make information more accessible for all. Explore the full site here.
