Hook Named Best Workplace for Innovators

Honors by Fast Company

A company built for makers

Hook didn’t start with a venture capital injection or a five-year business plan; it started as a self-taught adventure. Our founders were accidental entrepreneurs who simply liked making stuff and figured out the "how" as they went.

That "make the challenge your own" energy has sustained us for twenty years—and it just earned Hook the #6 spot on Fast Company’s 2026 Best Workplaces for Innovators list, as well as a win in the Marketing, Advertising, and PR category.

Creating room for experimentation

Being recognized as a Best Workplace for Innovators requires building an environment where ideas have room to grow, no matter where they start. For Hook, that begins with how we structure our teams. At around 20–30 people, each of our four multidisciplinary teams blends creative, design, motion, and production, keeping the scrappy, all-hands feel of our early days.

We’ve found that these small, diverse, and autonomous teams foster more innovative thinking and give everyone direct ownership over the final output. We back that creative freedom with structural support for rest and exploration: departmental clubs and training, annual growth stipends, an agency-wide AI Syndicate, and collective summer and winter shutdowns so the whole team can recharge together.

The most innovative workplaces don’t simply ask their employees to come up with great ideas; they create the conditions that make great ideas possible.

Investing in innovation

Over the past 12 months, we have formalized our maker mindset into a structured investment of nearly $900K in human capital and custom tooling. The centerpiece of that investment is our multidisciplinary Tech Enablement Team, which acts as the creative and technical partner for everyone’s "what if" moment. When anyone at Hook identifies a workflow bottleneck, they’re encouraged to ideate their own solutions or collaborate with our Tech Enablement team to find a new path forward.

This bottom-up approach has birthed a custom software ecosystem built entirely by our team, including tools like:

  • Adhub Teleport & Video Batcher - Dreamed up by a production animator, our Adhub ecosystem enables seamless design-to-tool transfers via intelligent layer labeling.

  • Slatemaker - Built for our YouTube TV pipeline, Slatemaker accelerates batch video rendering by mass-producing hundreds of broadcast video variations from a single template.

  • Slates QA - Our semi-automated QA tool streamlines high-volume projects with relatively rigid creative by using Figma templates to automatically verify text accuracy and technical specs against production schedules.

  • Teamification QA Bot - Our cloud-native, web-based application is designed to facilitate rapid, extreme-scale quality assurance across video, animated GIFs, and static assets.

As we’ve scaled, we’ve intentionally preserved that scrappy, bottom-up approach that empowers everyone to test and adapt until everything works better. By giving our teams the resources to create their own tools, innovation is a shared daily practice.
