Diverse perspectives have always been at the heart of impactful storytelling, allowing us to connect with audiences on deeper, more personal levels. During this year’s AIGA conference, our ACD Hieu Luong’s presentation, “Cultural Shifts Within the Margins,” was a reminder to creatives and executives everywhere about the impact we can make when we embrace cultural differences and allow them to shine.
ICYMI, here are some of our favorite insights from the session:
Use your voice. If you’re ever in a situation where a diverse perspective isn’t present for a project, don’t let it go unnoticed. Speak up and advocate for ways to include marginalized voices both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
Embrace the challenges. Challenges are bound to come your way when advocating for inclusivity, but don’t let that deter you. Remember that it’s okay to push back when others try to push their agenda onto your narrative.
Hand over the mic. Embracing identity is key to creating impactful narratives and telling authentic stories. Hold space for marginalized groups to own their stories and have real influence and responsibility—especially in decision-making—which makes all the difference.
As noted in his session, "You are the author of your own story, and it's important that YOU tell that story." Thanks for the reminders, Hieu!
