Demystifying How Search Works

An Education Campaign Made with Google

Finding simple answers to some very complex questions

As part of an ongoing initiative to earn more trust through transparency, we partnered with the Google Search team to produce a series of animated shorts that aim to simplify and demystify some of Search's most complex features.

Together we've covered topics including how autocomplete works, how Google protects its users, how Search determines what ads a user sees, and how it’s able to quickly surface information during a crisis.

The brief for each film was often just a user question Google wanted to answer—like “If Google has all this data about me, what are they doing to keep it safe?”

Each video was a balancing act. Provide enough information to help someone understand, but not so much detail they become confused. Give a complete explanation, but keep it under two minutes. We also wanted to create a visual story that’s compelling to watch, but doesn’t feel like it’s glossing over a complex problem.

Now after tens of millions of views on YouTube, the How Search Works video series has been a huge step in Google’s efforts to be a more transparent organization, with millions of users finding simple answers to some very complex questions.
